As the week came to a close, I got a visit from a colleague at work who told me about his upcoming engagement he was planning for Friday night. It sounded so casual yet so magical: dinner and drinks at Tyler’s (where the couple’s first date was), followed by ice skating at the American Tobacco Campus, and then a surprise proposal at the pond by the Full Frame Theater. I strapped on my camera, dressed in dark colors, threw on the long glass, and acted like tourist in the Bull City as these two ice skated throughout the evening and then kissed the night away. I stalked the two throughout the night and patiently awaited the special moment. All of a sudden, after relaxing at a picnic table by the pond, Richard dropped down to one knee. His proposal was so genuine and sweet. Caty couldn’t believe what was happening before her eyes. She was quickly enveloped in shock, then bliss, and then draped in love and euphoria.

I was so honored to be able to photograph this moment in Richard and Caty’s life and am still smiling about their engagement! These two have known each other for years and started dating about a year and a half ago. These two are so full of love and it’s written all over their faces for the world to see.  I’m sure these two will have smiles on their faces for eternity after their sweet engagement last night.

Congratulations, Richard + Caty! Thank you for allowing me to capture this milestone in your life and create heirlooms for you and your families! Best wishes to the both of you!

Meet Ashlyn. Your extraordinary 6-foot-4.5-inches high school senior. Nothing is average about this girl. She’s outgoing, spontaneous, adventurous, creative, and successful. As an outspoken and budding photographer (she has taken my class since her sophomore year of high school and soon heading to Savannah College of Art and Design), she’s told me from the beginning I’d be shooting her senior portraits. I’ve watched her grow and become her own person throughout her high school years, so I had an idea about how to make her senior portraits represent her free-spirit and goofy demeanor. We explored everything that makes the Dirty Durham the best city ever: climbing through a deserted castle, having deep conversations with Geoffrey the Giraffe (Northern High School’s unofficial school mascot that Ashlyn based her AP Art portfolio on), hanging out on Ninth Street, and the best local coffee shop, Cocoa Cinnamon, and shooting some awesome portraits in stunning light. I also shot some film and I believe her face was more excited when I developed her film then her face the first time she ever saw her first roll of developed film. I got some memorable photos with her Mom and Dad, then she flipped through some records in hopes of finding Jack White, and drank enough hot cocoa to make her forget how chilly it was outside. It’s been quite a journey with this girl and she’s got quite a journey ahead of her! Ashlyn, don’t be afraid to be yourself and let your spirit run free as you conquer this big world in front of you! (with your sidekick, Geoffrey, of course!)

Happy 1st Birthday, Bennie! I was contacted by his lovely grandmother, Pam, an Air Force friend of Mom’s from England, to take her grandson’s one-year old portraits. Her son and his wife, Andrew and Natalie, just moved back to Chapel Hill for graduate school and have an adorable and goofy little one, Bennie. We met out at Duke Park the other week for our portrait and play session. Let me just tell you, this kid can play hard. Laughing in the swings, climbing the playground, and sliding down the big slide were his absolute favorites besides cuddling with his mom and playing the drums on his dad’s head. Towards the end of the session, Bennie took off walking more than he ever had before! Although, by this point, I’m sure Bennie is flying around faster than Dash from The Incredible’s!  Natalie + Andrew, I was so honored to photograph your young family + sweet Bennie! Best of luck in Chapel Hill!

Go Bennie go!

20140626_allen_parrish-125iWhen Camille’s fiancé, a fellow co-worker and best SRO ever (I’m afraid what he’d do to me if I didn’t throw that in there, haha!), contacted me about photos, I was happily surprised to find out that they were in the midst of blending two families full of kids together! They decided they wanted to do separate portrait sessions before one big family portrait session, so on a beautiful and sunny day at the end of June, I met Camille and her four kids, twins, Charles & Chandler, Celsey, and Peyton at the West Point at the Eno park in north Durham. These kids are awesome! Celsey & Peyton were so smiley and bright, telling me about what they love at school and about their sports, gymnastics and baseball, respectively. Celsey even stole my heart with her glittery mustache earrings! Charles & Chandler are die-hard baseball players, traveling all over the state to play a good game of one of America’s favorite past times. These two, while similar, had two completely different favorite ball fields where they’ve played before: Charles loved playing in Charlotte while Chandler’s was Wilson. And of course, like any great travel ball players, they’ve played at good ol’ ECAP down the street from my old stomping grounds in Goldsboro!

Camille + family — y’all are such a fun bunch! You made a steamy N.C. summer afternoon into a great portrait session! Good luck with baseball, gymnastics and planning your big, new family!

The air is starting to get chilly, the leaves  quintessentially sum up autumn in North Carolina, the golden sun sets early, and high school football is coming to a close. For this session, I got to photograph one of our senior cheer captains in the beautiful and historic downtown Durham.  For Northern High senior, Bianca Decatur, her year is rushing by! She is such a brilliant, intelligent, independent, and inhibition-free young woman with so much life ahead of her! And I have absolutely no doubt that she will take the bull by the horns (haha, corny Bull City pun intended!) and rule this world like the strong-willed and cheerful soul that she is! This Durham girl isn’t afraid of anything! Bianca, it was great to spend time with you outside of our cheer practices and hear about your dreams and aspirations! Enjoy the rest of your senior year as it’ll fly by faster than you’ll ever imagine!

Enjoy all this time you have left! And let your momma love on you all she wants :)! Best of luck, Bianca!

This past thursday I was honored to hold the RDU Baton again! On my birthday in May, I held the baton for the first time and after meeting the lovely, Susannah Brinkley, at UNC’s journalism camp this summer, she asked me to hold it again! I had such a blast with it on my first go-round, I took her up on the challenge! For those new to this, the RDU Baton is a collaborative Instagram project started by Susannah Brinkley & Brittany Iery that showcases the people, lives, and unique spots around North Carolina’s Triangle! This day was a very busy one but came out awesome!

photo 1

Sorry for the late morning post! I’m so honored to hold the baton for a 2nd time! Today is freshman orientation at Northern High School in The Bull City, where I teach photography & it’s been a crazy morning! Although I have lived in Chapel Hill for almost 6 years & am a proud Tar Heel myself, Durham is quickly finding a place in my heart! This is a picture of our school giraffe, Geoffrey! Stolen from an old putt-putt place as a senior prank, NHS bought Geoffrey and made his home the school courtyard. Art club paints him different every year so they went surreal with a Salvador Dalí mustache & zebra stripes. Photo by @viedfinder #durham #school

I stopped today to pick up film from my recent trip to London & Ireland at my favorite camera shop, Southeastern. Tucked away by the farmer’s market in Carrboro, Southeastern is a “dinosaur” store that still offers a large variety of film, photo paper, vintage (and digital!) cameras, and they do specialty developing. The manager, Chris, runs a fantastic shop where photographers, beginning and professional, from all over the Triangle flock to for supplies. I started coming here in undergrad and still go today because of the friendly service, quick turnaround, and for the sake of supporting local businesses! #buylocal #carrboro #camera @SEC_Carrboro photo by @viedfinder

photo 3

My favorite coffee shop in the triangle is Cocoa Cinnamon in downtown Durham. Their coffee is delectable, their hot chocolate decadent, & their menu offers a huge array of hot and cold coffees! They also partner up with local bakeries to get the best sweet treats, like this chocolate lavender cheesecake! My brand new food & art blog, @treatswelovenc, was born here with the lovely @katiehatfield. Be on the lookout for some new upcoming posts, which have been postponed because of travel! @cocoacinnamon #coffee #durham photo by @viedfinder

I recently took up the JV and assistant competition cheerleading coaching job & I love it! Our team is full of strong, beautiful, and intelligent young ladies & we are pumped for the 2013 football season. Catch us at our next home game next Friday at the Durham County Stadium! #goknights #northerncheer #durham photo by @viedfinder

A student of mine introduced me to Pelican’s Sno-Cones last week on Roxboro Road, and so naturally, today’s hot weather just *forced* me to go grab a kiddie cone. My favorite flavor is the sugar-free sweet cherry (I know, I know, I’m one on those no-sugar-when-I-can-help-it people) but they have a huge menu of flavors! Some of which they claim to be “as dreamy as Zach Efron!” Haha, oh, Durham, you’re great! #durham photo by @viedfinder

I figured I’d give y’all a preview of my scanned film. Its the first time in a while I’ve shot color film & the magic is still there. I chose a shameless selfie for this one but at least it has a shallow depth-of-field and pretty bokeh right?! If y’all want to see the rest you’ll have to check out my blog, viedfinder.com, to see the rest of this photographic adventure in England & Ireland! #shameless #selfie #chapelhill. Usually my evenings & weekends are the only time I have to work on my photography business. I recently finished a personal project, which was a short documentary about a dance camp for underprivileged Hispanic girls. Currently, I’m working on scanning film and editing digital photos from my recent trip to Ireland. And then at a certain point, my dog, Eloise, whines enough for me to go cuddle her to sleep. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s adventures of @jtmoore3! Peace, y’all! #adventuresofeloise #chapelhill photo by @viedfinder

I hope you enjoyed my day! If you want, RDU Baton is always looking for people to hold the account! Go sign up here!

For my last studio project with my intermediate & proficient students, we decided to do personal projects. They had to develop something that was deep and meaningful to them. They also had to use at least one extra medium or technique. These projects came out awesome! I’m so proud of the work they did this semester & these projects show their skill, but also their personalities. Here are some of the best!

This year, my birthday was pretty awesome. Mainly because y’all made it fabulous & because I got to do what I love all day (make pretty photographs…duh)! I held the RDU Baton instagram account, a collaborative photo project held by the wonderful people of the Triangle to let the world see how AWESOME the Triangle-area of N.C. is! I didn’t have an unusually eventful day, but worked to make all my shots count! It’s definitely nice to have a challenge when shooting since I haven’t had that since the good ol’ days of Pat the photo professor! I included the original captions beneath each photo for y’all. You can sign up to hold the baton here.

Also, if interested, all shots are iPhone and I use a diverse group of photo apps and textures: Mexturespictwopictapgovscocamsnapspeed, and squaready (although this is just a handful of what populates my 2 “photo folders” on my phone).

Hello RDU! I’m Lauren V. Allen, a local photographer based out of chapel hill! I’m also a high school photography teacher at Northern High in Durham. Thanks for all the well wishes! Such a great way to start off a new year!

This week in intermediate photo, we did light painting! We needed a fun project to get us back up on our feet after our Art Gallery last week. The students did most of their light painting in-camera then photoshopped for contrast and saturation. Here are some of the best from class!
