This final post includes some fun weekend assignments and some of my last assignments from the Herald-Sun. I got the opportunity to shoot a church that meets in a field by the Durham Bulls, Dino Days (I wanted to become a paleontologist after shooting) and a library rally for the children of Durham. I also got to shoot my first track meet on one of the hottest days of the summer when heat indexes were above 110 degrees. Each assignment was a rather large event in the middle of the day, so I learned quickly to deal with the harsh light  by looking for shadows and shade and if there was none, I just dealt with it, and sweat and bake in the summer sun.

Overall, I learned a lot with this internship including all the best ways to navigate Durham. I met some genuine people who truly have  passion for their career and giving back to Durham in addition to visiting places I would have never ventured. A big thanks to Christine Nguyen and Bernard Thomas who made this internship the best part of my summer and taught me that experience is knowledge…even with all the heat features :)!

Part three of my Herald-Sun series takes part mostly when interns got to rule the photo department. Pretty awesome I shall say. Because not only did we rule, Harry Potter 7.2 came out, temperatures busted into the 100s and Durham practically melted. Although shooting inside for the American Dance Festival  and butter beer from the Harry Potter Party at the Southwest Regional Library kept me from melting after double heat features (feature pictures illustrating extreme heat; usually include pools, kids, sweat and old folks) attacked!

Part two of my Herald-Sun series includes some of my favorite shoots from this summer. Tour de Fat, a bike festival with beer sponsored by Fat Tire Ale, kicked off in Durham, N.C. and made for some hilarious shots. In this post, I also got to meet a world traveler who collects chess sets, inventor of the Thundershirt, and a local Meals on Wheels volunteer.

This summer, I had the wonderful opportunity of interning at The Herald-Sun, a community paper in Durham, N.C. I was able to shoot a lot of different assignments from heat features to sports to the American Dance Festival (oh, and let’s not forget every graduation in Durham, Chapel Hill, and Roxboro). It was definitely rewarding getting to learn about Durham, how a real-life newspaper works, and getting to spend office time with Christine and Bernard, by far the coolest photographers you’ll ever meet. The next few blog posts are some of what I consider my best shots of the summer, some which ran and some which didn’t, so consider this a special series of unseen footage!
