The air is starting to get chilly, the leaves  quintessentially sum up autumn in North Carolina, the golden sun sets early, and high school football is coming to a close. For this session, I got to photograph one of our senior cheer captains in the beautiful and historic downtown Durham.  For Northern High senior, Bianca Decatur, her year is rushing by! She is such a brilliant, intelligent, independent, and inhibition-free young woman with so much life ahead of her! And I have absolutely no doubt that she will take the bull by the horns (haha, corny Bull City pun intended!) and rule this world like the strong-willed and cheerful soul that she is! This Durham girl isn’t afraid of anything! Bianca, it was great to spend time with you outside of our cheer practices and hear about your dreams and aspirations! Enjoy the rest of your senior year as it’ll fly by faster than you’ll ever imagine!

Let’s just say, I’m so amazed at all the strength, determination, and friendship that exists between these kids from Cypress Dojo in Gainseville, Florida! This past weekend, I went to Atlanta to watch my best friend since I was 3, Kaylyn Kraus, test for her black belt in Cuong Nhu, an oriental martial art style. Cypress dojo had 4 people testing for their black belt, Kaylyn, Alex, Tom, and Jesus, and all four passed (woot woot!). Now, this is no easy test. My body was falling apart just watching them, and it’s just a breeze for them to break through 3-4 wooden boards with their elbow. You know, they are super ninjas, or more formally, senseis! In addition, I met some wonderful people from the Cypress Dojo & am excited to finally put a face to all the people Kaylyn talks of constantly! They are truly a huge family of awesome people! Congratulations, y’all–go on to great things!

Last weekend, I went to the Charles B. Aycock H.S. football game to shoot an assignment for my documentary photojournalism class. The resulting video is an interpretation of the game through 11 different words: mystery, flow, freedom, colors of life, unbridled joy, dew, shooting away from the eye, mood distant, drama and layers. I hope you enjoy this quick little video!

Besides doing random videos and photo assignments, I’m starting work on 2 documentary pieces, one based on social interactions and the feeling of loneliness and the other on biofuels for our military. If you are interested in learning more about either of these projects, comment, email, tweet or Facebook me!

Patrick Evans, Maggie Craig and her great-grandson, Zyaire Morris, eat lunch during the Meet Me at the Bridge street ministry next to the Hwy. 147 bridge on Blackwell Street on Saturday, July 16, 2011. The ministry provides food, donated clothing as well as a message to individuals in downtown Durham. Next Friday, the ministry will sleep outside CCB Plaza to raise homelessness awareness. This final post includes some fun weekend assignments and some of my last assignments from the Herald-Sun. I got the opportunity to shoot a church that meets in a field by the Durham Bulls, Dino Days (I wanted to become a paleontologist after shooting) and a library rally for the children of Durham. I also got to shoot my first track meet on one of the hottest days of the summer when heat indexes were above 110 degrees. Each assignment was a rather large event in the middle of the day, so I learned quickly to deal with the harsh light  by looking for shadows and shade and if there was none, I just dealt with it, and sweat and bake in the summer sun.

Lily Yoder waits anxiously while her grey balloon mouse is created during Durham Public Library’s Summer Reading Pit Stop Rally on Saturday, July 16, 2011. Children received a free book from the Reading is Fundamental program as well as school supplies. There were games and booths set up for arts and crafts, bug eating, face paint and balloon animals. Overall, I learned a lot with this internship including all the best ways to navigate Durham. I met some genuine people who truly have  passion for their career and giving back to Durham in addition to visiting places I would have never ventured. A big thanks to Christine Nguyen and Bernard Thomas who made this internship the best part of my summer and taught me that experience is knowledge…even with all the heat features :)!
