Evan. An athlete. A smart pants. A super hero. An aspiring fighter pilot. This kid is on top of the world, y’all (or will literally be when his dream of becoming a F-22 fighter pilot come true). Evan used to be my neighbor in Seymour Johnson’s base housing back in the late 1990’s. He and my brother were total bros and would rule the trampoline, mummify G.I. Joes, and carve their names into everything. When Evan’s mom asked me to do his senior portraits, I had no idea he was getting ready to graduate! I still saw him as my younger neighbor who was crazy strong for 4-years-old. For his portraits, we ventured out to some of Goldsboro’s iconic places including Seymour Johnson Air Force Base to see the planes-on-a-stick. It was a very foggy Veteran’s Day morning, which made this session inspiring but also nostalgic as the jets appeared to be shooting out of the sky, it seemed.

Evan is on his way to do awesome things with his life. He’s at the top of his class and aspires to go to the Air Force Academy (finger’s crossed that he gets in!), he’s a top wrestler and football player at his school, he wants to study aerospace engineering in school, he’s not afraid to be a goofball, and he has a clear passion for his superheroes (seriously, he’s got the best superhero wardrobe in the world), and could be a model if all else fails. But on top of all these accolades, he’s a genuinely wonderful big brother who is super chill and super patient, a great son, and a big dreamer who loves his country. Evan, good luck with all your life endeavors and I hope your ride to the top is a spectacular adventure!

Meet Ashlyn. Your extraordinary 6-foot-4.5-inches high school senior. Nothing is average about this girl. She’s outgoing, spontaneous, adventurous, creative, and successful. As an outspoken and budding photographer (she has taken my class since her sophomore year of high school and soon heading to Savannah College of Art and Design), she’s told me from the beginning I’d be shooting her senior portraits. I’ve watched her grow and become her own person throughout her high school years, so I had an idea about how to make her senior portraits represent her free-spirit and goofy demeanor. We explored everything that makes the Dirty Durham the best city ever: climbing through a deserted castle, having deep conversations with Geoffrey the Giraffe (Northern High School’s unofficial school mascot that Ashlyn based her AP Art portfolio on), hanging out on Ninth Street, and the best local coffee shop, Cocoa Cinnamon, and shooting some awesome portraits in stunning light. I also shot some film and I believe her face was more excited when I developed her film then her face the first time she ever saw her first roll of developed film. I got some memorable photos with her Mom and Dad, then she flipped through some records in hopes of finding Jack White, and drank enough hot cocoa to make her forget how chilly it was outside. It’s been quite a journey with this girl and she’s got quite a journey ahead of her! Ashlyn, don’t be afraid to be yourself and let your spirit run free as you conquer this big world in front of you! (with your sidekick, Geoffrey, of course!)

These girls are so. much. fun! That is easily an understatement! Both are outrageously smart, beautiful and have an exciting life ahead of them. Alex + I have known each other for years when we used to tumble our little hearts out on the cheerleading mat so I was honored when she asked me to take her cap and gown portraits with her friend Emily! We met at the Old Well to take some classic graduation photos, then made our way through campus until we came upon their second home: the Stallings-Evans Sports Medicine Center. Both Alex + Emily are graduating from the athletic training program at UNC and have worked with the best team in collegiate sports. This session was full of laughter, play, and adventure. Thank you so much for letting me capture your final days at UNC, ladies! Cherish all your memories + your friendship as you travel through life!

Best of luck to you two fabulous ladies!

caitlyn_unc_grad_2014-10Meet Caitlyn, an amazing + stylish soon-to-be Carolina graduate, who has a bright future ahead of her! She studied medical anthropology, studied abroad in Paris (super jealous!) and hopes to land a gig helping low-income communities gain healthcare here in N.C. Needless to say, she has a full heart and the Carolina Way in her blood. She loves the lights and beauty of McCorkle Place and said she would miss just about everything at UNC. But have no fear, Caitlyn is a gorgeous, strong, and independent young woman who can rock some hot azalea pink lipstick while taking over the world!

The air is starting to get chilly, the leaves  quintessentially sum up autumn in North Carolina, the golden sun sets early, and high school football is coming to a close. For this session, I got to photograph one of our senior cheer captains in the beautiful and historic downtown Durham.  For Northern High senior, Bianca Decatur, her year is rushing by! She is such a brilliant, intelligent, independent, and inhibition-free young woman with so much life ahead of her! And I have absolutely no doubt that she will take the bull by the horns (haha, corny Bull City pun intended!) and rule this world like the strong-willed and cheerful soul that she is! This Durham girl isn’t afraid of anything! Bianca, it was great to spend time with you outside of our cheer practices and hear about your dreams and aspirations! Enjoy the rest of your senior year as it’ll fly by faster than you’ll ever imagine!

Back in the beginning of June, I had the wonderful pleasure of shooting my first class of 2014 senior portrait session with the beautiful Lindsay Player! This girl has the most contagious smile and is such a natural in front of the camera. She’s got classic & elegant style…I asked our whole session about her wardrobe! We traversed around downtown Goldsboro and her bubbly self greeted all the people who passed! Lindsay goes to Eastern Wayne High School, does StageStruck Theatre and wants to follow her sister to Carolina and do the physical therapy program! She was so much fun to hang out with and I could’ve spent days photographing her and complimenting her clothes & accessories! Such a natural & she laughed at all my bad jokes so as far as I’m concerned, Lindsay is the bomb dot com!

Lindsay-You are a strong, beautiful, and outgoing young lady with the world ahead of you! Cherish your senior year and all the people that will make it unforgettable! You have the world in your hands and God in your heart-your life is set, girl! I wish you the best of luck on all your life’s adventures!

I’ve been itching for weeks to post these photos! And now that the recital is done and the surprise has surprised–here are some lovely pictures for y’all wonderful people! Back in May, I photographed Artistic Dance Academy’s senior company as a surprise gift for their beloved instructors, Mrs. Patricia and Mrs. Crystal! These girls are on their way to make their marks in this huge world! All of them have great things ahead of them and hearts full of love & grace! I was in tears with them at their last recital last weekend! I’ve watched all these girls dance their hearts out across that stage for 7 years (both recital & Dance for Christ) now and they have grown into strong, beautiful dancers and even stronger young women. Good luck all of you as you take over this world with your faith and grace!

Meet Allie Russell. I’m so glad you are getting to meet her because she is truly a beautiful person. I remember meeting her on our first assignment for Blue & White magazine back in the day, then we worked countless hours working at the world’s best college newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel, where she just finished up her last paper as Director of Visuals. She’s got a great eye for photography & a killer eye for what looks good…her pinterest boards speak wonders, people. While Allie & I go way back, I couldn’t have been happier to be asked to take her senior portraits! She is so fun to be around and had some awesome photo ideas, and while we couldn’t find a field of flowers, she was game for laying in a flower bed in UNC’s arboretum and then going to shoot in our favorite Franklin Street bar, Linda’s. Good luck to you after graduation and at your internship at the Student Law Press Center! Can’t wait for our delicious basket of cheese fries later!

20130424_allen_leslie-50i

It’s spring time on the Hill and graduation is just around the corner! I was so excited when Leslie asked me to do her senior portraits because she is such a fun & beautiful lady to be around! I had an awesome opportunity to work with Leslie on my capstone documentary, roots, in the Fall of 2011. I learned about her heritage and how it much it shapes her as a person which is something I will always admire. She dons a beautiful pair of feathers on her graduation cap, a tradition that is gifted to graduating seniors in her sorority by her  sisters and elders in her community. Leslie is graduating from the UNC School of Education & will  be returning in the Summer to start her graduate program for school counseling. This session was full of laughter & smiles and a LOT of goofing around across UNC’s campus and the beloved Franklin Street! Leslie–I wish you all the luck in the world with your future; nothing can stop a strong, loving, and sassy woman like you!
